If “The Last of Us: Part II” doesn’t win the Game-of-the-Year 2020 award, it isn’t going to change how good this game is!

    Posted: 09 Dec 2020 12:06 PM PST

Just wanted to get this out there because I've seen a few people who believe 100% that the game will the main award tomorrow at the TGA 2020. Now, don't get me wrong, I also REALLY hope that it wins. But I won't go around and tell fans of the other nominated titles that their favourite game doesn't deserve it.

If we look back at the recent years of the "Game Awards" we've seen that the overall expectation of players has been subverted. In 2018, despite being the highest rated game in that year, Red Dead Redemption 2 didn't win the GotY-award, there was something about God of War that convinced the the jury more. In 2016, Overwatch won, that came out in the same year as Uncharted 4 or Doom.

Let's be honest, every game that is nominated this year has a lot of positive points that make it deserve the GotY-award. Even though Part II is the highest rated new game by professional critics this year, any game could win. Especially Ghost of Tsushima and Animal Crossing were really popular. But if they win and "The Last of Us: Part II" doesn't, it won't alter my perception of the game in any way because the experience of playing it is what makes it so special, not the validation of an award Naughty Dog will receive. If it wins, I'll be happy.

The category that Part II will win for sure is "Best Performance". No other game this year could rival the insane emotions that Ashley Johnson and Laura Bailey brought to the screen.

Why do some people keep repeating this misleading statement when criticizing Abby? (LATE GAME SPOILERS)

    Posted: 09 Dec 2020 02:04 PM PST

For the past few months, I've been seeing the same thing being said about Abby when trying to criticize her character. It's always something along the lines of "Abby's development with the kids are rushed, and she quickly turns to killing her friends for some kids she's known for a few days". It's almost like a meme that people keep repeating but never actually giving any context.

Abby was saved by these kids despite being on different sides of an ongoing war. Her side of the story was about overcoming the guilt and lack of closure from getting her revenge. She only spent a few days with them, but she quickly realized in this short time that they're really just innocent kids trying to escape from a cult.

So now to go back to the idea that Abby "killed her friends for kids she just met". She never intended to go against the WLF. In fact, she actually made an effort to just disarm and not kill the first one that caught them in the island. She put down her gun, begged Isaac to spare them, and was willing to die for Lev. It was only until Yara gave them an opportunity to escape that Abby took it. She didn't start killing any of the WLF until THEY were trying to kill her and Lev as well (I've heard some people can stealth through this part so maybe no kills needed?). These "kids she just met" saved her life, are willing to listen to her, and are just trying escape. Her "friends" in the WLF were not willing to hear her out, and were actively trying to kill her. The time spent with either group is not an important consideration when one of them is SHOOTING at you.

    Anyone else feel like this?

I really appreciate and love Joel and Ellie's relationship more within the second game (and then also going back to the first game). Even though he isn't around for a lot of the game his presence is always strong. Especially seeing more of Joel's soft side and dad vibes. I really enjoyed both stories and I'm excited to see what ND do next tbh.

Whether or not LoU 2 wins GOTY, it doesn’t change the phenomenal experience

    Posted: 09 Dec 2020 05:16 AM PST

I normally don't have an opinion about game awards. In my eyes it doesn't change the experience in any way.

But with that said there's a lot of hate and negativity being spewed towards Last of Us fans recently. So thought I'd remind y'all that the game is still just as phenomenal with or without an award (though it's already received countless awards)

Just Finished The Last Of Us

    Posted: 09 Dec 2020 01:10 AM PST

Wasn't really a big fan of story driven game due to short attention span and just having trouble both playing a game and following a story.
I just finished both the last of us part 1 and 2 in like 2 weeks of non stop playing. Got inspired because i've always loved Telltale The walking dead and i got this recommended.

So i bought a ps4 and went at it.
Got to say? 10/10 games. People getting mad at Joel's death is baby behavoir in m book. People die, also those you care about it sucks but it makes (atleast made me) feel sad and angry at Abby (which is what was supposed to happen)

When i got to the long Abby part (which IMO is perfect, it's creates some GREAT questions and narrative but it was put in a bit too late tbh) i took 2 days off because i had to get over my personal hatred for Abby to be able to play the part without just hating on it. Good thing i did. LOVED IT.

Thanks for this amazing game experience.. haven't been left so much in tears and emotionally shifted since S4 of the walking dead.

Just finished The Last of Us II

    Posted: 09 Dec 2020 04:36 AM PST

As I write this the song with Ellie and Joel plays on the credits. Hell of a game and a hell of an ending. Loved this game and love this series.

Such an emotional rollercoaster of anger, vengeance, and misery from both Abby and Ellie. I liked how we got both sides of the story and how even though I didn't want to like Abby I ended up feeling like I understood her.

The way Joel's decision in Part 1 weighed on Ellie was so well done and woven throughout the story. How Ellie deals with the frustrations of not only seeing Joel get brutally murdered, but how she deals with the knowledge of his actions being the reason she is even alive at all.

The environments were amazing and created such great ambiance that really set the tone for each and every encounter. Naughty Dog really upped the grime factor is Part 2 and it gave that muck and dirt feeling to the wasteland that is the remains of civilization.

As far as the boss fight that stuck out to me the most, fighting the Rat King just made me so tense and grossed out in its own way I have to give props.

A question lingers for me, where do Dina and J.J. go? I'm assuming back to Jackson? I can't imagine she just goes off to raise J.J. on her own with the community there for her but since we don't have anything explicit I figured I'd pose it here.

In regards to the ending, it hurt me to see Ellie leave Dina and J.J. to go after Abby, even though I understood. I guess that in this world there's no real happy endings where the main character just walks off into the sunset. Instead, she sets her guitar down and strolls back into the wilderness. And I'm okay with that.

    Marlene and Ellie theories [Spoilers]

    Posted: 09 Dec 2020 01:08 PM PST

For a long time I thought Marlene had personally looked after and raised Ellie since she was a baby. We were told that Marlene had promised Ellie's biological mother Anna (just before she died) that she'd look after Ellie.

I read recently though that Ellie only actually met Marlene for the first time when she was 13 years old which was a bit of a shock and poses the obvious question, if it wasn't Marlene that brought Ellie up who was it?

Confusingly, at the very end of chapter 3 of American Dreams Marlene instantly recognises Ellie which is strange given the previous revelation about them having no contact.

I find it hard to believe Marlene never met Ellie in all the years prior to her becoming a teenager. I mean why would Ellie appear to be so reluctant to leave Marlene when Joel and Tess showed up if she barely knew who she was? Why would she be so protective of her as to nearly stab Joel when she thought he posed a threat?

When Joel does actually ask Ellie about her relationship with Marlene Ellie says "just a friend I guess". Not sure if she was being a bit guarded when she said that. Maybe she didn't trust Joel enough at that point and was deliberately vague about how much of a bond the two of them really had.

    Any thoughts?

Also, does Ellie know Marlene is dead and how she died?

Do you think Joel was justified in killing Marlene? Of all the deaths in both games I thought hers was the most shocking. Did she really pose a threat when Joel had wiped out dozens of Firefly guards to get to Ellie?
