If somehow the Lord gave me a second chance to platinum both games, I would do it all over again. Yes, even the Firefly/Hunter Journey trophies.

Someone's gotta explain THAT scene with Abby and Owen, might as well be me.

    Posted: 08 Aug 2020 05:25 PM PDT

Who are Owen and Abby to each other?

Abby and Owen share a deep connection with each other, and they remain best friends even past what happened at Jackson. After Abby lost her father and became obsessed with finding him justice, she pushed Owen away. Owen is reliable and patient, but unwilling to feed Abby's lust for retribution. When he pushes back, even gently, Abby hits the gym. A lot of this may be inferred by how Ellie treats Dina at the farmhouse - and the ultimatum Dina presents to Ellie. Owen draws lines that Abby is compelled to cross.

What do you do when your best friend is taking the wrong path, and you can't stop them? Set aside that the poor girl's lost her father, how do YOU give them up when they are losing themselves? Should you? Is the person you love still in there? Or are they lost to an infection of a different kind? Do you cling to that hope that they'll find their way home? Or do you move on with your life? Owen splits the difference.

Owen never loses hope that Abby will find her way home. Even though he knows it's wrong, even though he knows it's bad for her, he goes with her to Jackson. He's dating Mel, he's trying to be happy for his own sake, but in a flash, he and Mel find themselves far more committed to each other than they intended. In Jackson, things go about as well as they could have, but the catharsis isn't what they expected. The nightmares never leave Abby. Mel regrets her part in it. And after everything, Owen is further isolated by Abby, and increases his distance with Mel. These close friends all take up ignoring each other.

In the Morgue, Nora gives Abby reason to suspect that Owen is in a body bag. With her stomach churning - she commits to finding him. When she does, he lets his heart bleed. Abby is only listening for cues that will let him go back to the WLF, and expresses relief that killing Danny was in self defense. She misunderstands his entire story.

Owen is quick to empathize with everyone around him. He does not valorize the Fireflies, and he sees himself and his group in the "enemy" Seraphites. Face to face with a man in a brown cloak with eyes like Joel's - he puts down his rifle, unwilling to code another faction as less worthy than his own, unable to fight for something he sees as completely arbitrary.

    But why does they sexx??

When it's made clear to Abby that Owen isn't going back, and is instead still holding on to the hope the Fireflies instilled in him when he was younger, Abby belittles him and his empathy as naive and childish. And for the first time since losing her father, Owen empathizes with Abby on a different level. In order to win the argument, he activates his anger at the people that killed his family, and Abby lets out her self loathing on him. It's a very negative connection, but this negative connection is still the first meaningful moment they've shared in years. They tear off each other's clothes, and give themselves to the other.

    And it's fucking dirty.

Because, again, their connection isn't one of reconciliation but of self-loathing. And for Owen, a man who places so much importance on human connection, well maybe that's better than the loveless relationship he has going on with Mel. But Abby wakes up with the same urgency as she did in that Jackson lodge. The nightmares never left. And she realizes that she's dragging Owen down with her. She aggressively pushes him away. "I don't give a shit about last night."

    Why does it matter??

The next day, she conquers her fear of highs, and defeats the most terrifying monster on the planet, all for a young Seraphite girl. She returns with the medical supplies, and Mel performs the necessary surgery. And after all that, Mel calls Abby out on her bullshit. It's hard to know for certain if she knows about the fling from the night before, but I think it's fair to say Mel picks up on Owen's weirdness whenever Abby's around. She tears Abby down, not just for fucking her baby daddy, but for what she sees as evident. In these past four years, everything Abby has touched turned to shit. Every person Abby knows is worse off for getting to know her. And... Mel is right. Abby's a stronger person, but she's less than who she used to be when her dad was alive. Abby's ruined Owen, he's less than who he was, holding out hope for a friend that's lost themselves. It's not long into that morning before Manny gets his head blown off by her ghost, followed by Owen and Mel after sunset.

I think the affair shows how much damage Abby's path for revenge has done to her relationships. It means any connection she develops comes paired with righteous anger and contempt for one's self. She has to overcome this in order to be a responsible guardian for Lev, and she does when she faces Ellie on the beach, where she fights for her life instead of the delivery of death.

My favourite franchise... Part 1 - Masterpiece. Part 2 - I saw the leaks, was a former hater, decided to give it a chance, went with small hopes into the game and ended up loving it. I enjoyed every second of my first playthrough. Also, I got platinum. Thanks ND! An emotional roller-coaster.
