For me this game is not a 10 because it’s perfect

    Posted: 12 Jul 2020 09:31 PM PDT

But because no piece of media has violated and devastated me in the way that this game has. First off Joel's death... Now I've watched a lot of movies but no movie has utterly shattered me like Joel's death. In a movie, a beloved character would die off sacrificing themselves or doing something heroic. Vader died protecting Luke, the Iron Giant sacrificed his life stopping a nuke, Gandalf "died" saving the fellowship from Balrog, and so forth. But with Joel's death, I felt this sense of looming dread as soon as Abby met Joel, and then in an instant, Joel gets a shotgun to the leg, and my soul was crushed because I knew what was gonna happen. But no it gets worse switching back to Ellie. And then Ellie opens the door... And Jesus fucking Christ, thanks to Ashley Johnson's down right haunting performance, I cans still hear the desperate cries of " I'll fucking kill you", and "Joel fucking get up" even after the three weeks since finishing this game.

Secondly, playing as Abby at first was so jarring and disconnected. At this point in the game, after hearing so much negativity I thought this is where the game would collapse. But then you play through amazing set pieces; meeting Lev and Yara and having to fight off stalkers without any weapons nor health bar, the sky bridge scene, fucking Rat King comes out of nowhere, and the war on Seraphite island. But still despite these epic set pieces I didn't really care about Abby, until the scene where it was just her and a demoralized Lev alone on a boat, and Abby gives Lev her jacket and tries to comfort him. I don't know why, but this simple gesture of Abby comforting this poor child who lost his sister and mother, was so heart wrenching and I'm thinking holy shit, I care about these characters now. And then the aquarium scene where Abby breaks down and throws up was just such a gut punching revelation of the destruction Ellie had caused. Then to top it all off, you have to fight Ellie as Abby, and this part stressed me like no media has and made me feel so miserable and conflicted as I witnessed Abby relentlessly beat the shit out of her and Dina.

Then the ending fight against Abby was absolutely exhausting and nauseating. The pillars, and seeing Abby tortured and crucified gave me goosebumps, but it didn't stop there. Ellie who I was begging to not do it, did it, and decided to fight Abby. The cutting and hearing Abby scream almost made me throw up, and I just wanted to put my controller down but she kept on going and started to drown Abby, and in a sigh of relief she let go. Seeing Ellie alone on the beach was downright riveting. But the game didn't end there and kept going as Ellie returned to the farm, and seeing Dina and JJ leave was heartbreaking but made sense. Then Ellie picked up the guitar and tried to play Joel's song and this point I'm already crying, but it didn't end there either. We get a flashback of Joel and Ellie's final conversation and then the game ends. This scene absolutely broke me and moved me in a way nothing else has and will go down as not just my favorite video game scene but moment in any media ever. It's this scene that even after three weeks after completing it, hasn't left my mind and has made me reflect and understand the game's themes more.

    Abby’s weakness

    Posted: 12 Jul 2020 11:57 AM PDT

I just wanted to say that Abby's fear of heights was an absolutely awesome touch. It's relatively superfluous to her story, and isn't a foreshadowing of anything like how she dies. It just creates a layer of depth to her character, and makes the moments when she's at a great height - such as crossing the sky bridge with Lev - all the more intense.

Plus which, it makes her more human as a character - considering how easy it would be for her to be portrayed as utterly fearless and superhuman, to see her becoming absolutely terrified to the point of shaking when she's high up just reminds you that she's a normal person with weaknesses and vulnerabilities.

It's very rare for something to break the rule of Chekhov's gun and actually still work out great, but this definitely stands out.

i think this is much better story for TLOU2

    Posted: 12 Jul 2020 12:50 PM PDT

Joel and ellie are playing video games at Jackson when WHOOSH it's underattack, it's the fireflies come to claim Ellie. Joel is like, got you Ellie, you are like a daughter to me and Ellie says I love you Dad and then they kick ass shooting fireflies right and left

Abby grabs joel and is like im going to kill you for killing my dad and ellie cant do anything and abby is suddenly shot in the face her ghead i explodes and they turn around in amazement

it's riley! ellie says i thought you were dead and riley is like nope you cant get rid of me that easy babe (remember we never saw her die??) and they kiss its way hot

she tells them about crazy cannibals she met and its davids group so they all go in there and itys like holy shit evil cannibal city and kill all the cannibals and free people and riley shows them there is a doctor in a cage who makes a vaccine with a sample of ellies blood. he says its good they came to him and not that idiot abbys dad (who wasa con-artist anyway, not even real doctor)

his vaccine can even bring people back to life so they all go and dig up sarah and put the vaccine on her and then shes ok again and hugs joel and says oh your watch IS broken now and they laugh hahahaha and joel is like meet your sister ellie and everyone cries a ton then fights infected and now its like super easy because they are immune so they clear town in like 5 min using just knives, joel is like a tank its wild

then Ellie and riley get married in huge wedding, joel gives ellie away and sarah is a bridesmaid anf tommy is best man and now the world has no more infected and joel is made president because he found the vaccione guy and they adopt a giraffe then it ends where they all laugh at how stupid abby is as camera pans up to sky with joel and ellie playing guitar (they arent really in the sky its abstract)

About my love for The Last of Us Part 2 . [Spoilers]

    Posted: 12 Jul 2020 05:13 PM PDT

    Heavy on the spoilers here.

Part of why I wanted to write this post is that I was surprised by just how conflicted the fanbase is when it comes to this game. Another is just to outline why I was so affected by both these titles.

I went into this game completely blind. I had played the first game once and I didn't want to revisit it after that because the story felt so complete to me and I didn't want another playthrough to muddle the first experience I had with the game which was so intense and precious to me. Me and my father played the first game together when it first came out, when I was thirteen-fourteen. We decided to do the same this time around, just like we have for all the uncharted titles as well. We were unaware of the leaks. I had deleted my reddit app and youtube app just to avoid spoilers. The only thing that I knew about the game was that we were going to play Ellie this time around, so we went in completely blind.

For some reason these two titles hit me harder than any other piece of art that I've been privy to in my 21 years. It quenches my thirst for melancholic narrative. I'm still convinced that the first game has the best ending to anything ever, so opening up to this world again was truly riveting. I was far from disappointed. I cannot get it out of my mind. These characters are still with me.

I hope this thread can be seen as sort of a refuge for those of us who really like the game. I would be more than happy though to discuss the story with those of you who didn't.

This story took a lot of guts to tell. We knew that Joel was living on borrowed time. We knew that his lie was unsustainable. He lit the world on fire to save this one girl, whose life he deemed so precious that he was willing to forgoe the future of humanity to maintain it. It's such a beautiful testament to how we function as human beings. Let the world burn, but let me keep this one corner of heaven for myself - her company.

Knowing this and knowing that we would play as Ellie this time around, it seemed inevitable that his lie would fall apart. His wrongdoings would ultimately catch up to him, it seemed unavoidable, as did his death. Druckmann knows this as well and I think he made a very mature choice in how he chose to portray this disintegration. Joel dies immediately and the player is left devastated, digusted, horrified. But as much as I would have loved to have seen more on-screen time for Joel and more interactions between Ellie and Joel, I think his character arch was just about finished. He had made his choices and that was that. I find it really difficult to imagine this sequel with Joel being more of an active participant in the narrative, given that you play as Ellie. His death was not portrayed the way it was for shock value. Neither was it an affront to the last game. His death infuses the rest of the narrative with a sense of dread, especially when you know how blinded Ellie would be by her rage. She is left so emotionally vulnerable without him and puts herself in so much danger to avenge him. Every step of the way I just wanted her to turn back because I knew she was headed in to the very heart of darkness.

While I had sensed that this would happen, I didn't know it would happen so soon. Neither did I know that we would play the woman who would kill Joel. Druckmann could have gone the easy route and with a melodramatic scene of Ellie finding out about his lie towards the end of the game. It would have been really easy, and cheesy, to have his death be part of the climax of the story. But doing this at the beginning of the game opened up so many doors for what the narrative could be, and gives such colour to her love for Joel. They had four peaceful years together, and letting these years be portrayed by way of flashbacks infused so much emotion in to every word of the dialogue. By god, it was fucking unbearable.

The best part about this game for me,personally, was when you found out that Ellie already knew what Joel had done to the fireflies when she went out to take revenge on Abby. The scene itself played out beautifully but that flashback threw her quest for revenge in a completely different light. Towards the end of the game, a scene shows her willingness to forgive Joel, despite the horrific things he had done. This was the reason she went after Abby. She took that opportunity away from her. Just as Joel rekindled his faith in humanity through her and set the world on fire just for her, she forsake her life and her own humanity just to avenge him, which ultimately proved futile. Every step, every bullet shot, every slice of the knife, was a testament to her willingness to forgive him, in spite of everything. It was a beautiful exposition on grief, irrationality, love, and futility.

    I fucking loved this game.
