Ok hear me out: Kevin James as Joel and The rock as Ellie

Since we're all talking about parallels here's something I noticed while playing again!!

    Posted: 13 Jul 2020 03:56 PM PDT

So what was actually left in *THAT* room?

    Posted: 13 Jul 2020 02:21 PM PDT

    RED = Joel's, TEAL = Ellie's, PURPLE = NOTABLE MENTION

    1. Duck sculpture, two can be found in the main wall unit in the living room of Joel's house. The lone star (Joel's from Texas) also appears here. Found just behind the door of the room at the farm.
    2. More sculptures. The horse rider was the last one Joel was working on prior to his death. Other sculptures from the house are boxed right beside that one. The eagle one beside Joel's pictures of Sarah and Ellie is one of them.
    3. *Notable mention* This is the box Ellie keeps her journals in, with other books like A Tale Of Two Cities, Illiad and the Oddysey, War & Peace and No Pun Intended. No Pun Intended gets left behind on top of the desk. The rest of the box and the box itself is missing. The model for this box is a variation of the other taped boxes in the world, the top is a split top instead of a lid like the others.
    4. More sculptures, the bear one specifically is on this shelf at Joel's workshop. The same taped box model also shows up in the closet but this model get's recycled pretty often in the game. As mentioned, Ellie's box in 4 is the only variation of this model that I have seen. Again, specifically missing in the epilogue.
    5. The box of records and the locking case of records under the desk can be found in Joel's bedroom. Special mention for the record under the Crooked Still one, seems to be a spinoff of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, live in Austin, Texas. Again, where Joel's from.
    6. *Notable mention* While not in the room, this jacket gets left in the master bedroom of the farm. Same jacket Ellie was wearing on the day of Joel's death and the day she leaves Jackson with Dina.
    7. These are boxes of clothes from Ellie's place in Jackson during Waking up. The model with the shirt hanging out has been turned 90 degrees and the other two are marked Summer Clothes and Old Clothes in Waking Up but have been turned 180 degrees. The models are the same. The clothes/textures within them are the same.
    8. Lantern, found on Joel's front porch. Insignificant but Joel's regardless.
    9. *Notable mention* This is the cover art for the first Savage Starlight comic book you pick up as Joel to give to Ellie in P1.
    10. *Notable mention* Sam's robot is in this bin. Along with guitar strings and a spaceman figure.
    11. *Notable mention* Arcade game is on this shelf. Probably as a callback to Riley.

A few other things I forgot to mark out in the photo that's worth mentioning:

    1. All the comic books in the room were collected by Joel for Ellie. There's a dialogue in the Finding Strings where Tommy mentions him and Joel going through a school and finding some of them. I'm assuming the closed taped boxes are also full of comic books. The game doesn't actually render textures inside them, so we can't know for sure.
    2. In the closet there are three of the same models of the red box you collect Joel's stuff from in Packing up. The models are exactly the same and also show up elsewhere in the world, Ellie's place in Waking up being one them. Inconclusive as to whether or not one of these is Joel's even though one is left by itself so it was not marked.
    3. The art supplies, the easel and the apron are from Ellie's place in Waking Up as well. The textures are the same.
    4. The charcoal drawing and oil paints of JJ and Dina are missing but I'm sure mostly everyone knows that by now.

Everything else in the room I've found no significance to. If you think something should be edited/added/removed from the post, let me know! All in all, I believe a good portion (probably 85%) of the stuff left behind in the room is either Joel's or related to Joel and Ellie's past. I'll let you guys decide what the epilogue as a whole actually means for yourself.

edit: unrelated to the room itself but I found that when you go through the house in the epilogue, there are dust outlines on the floor like someone had recently moved stuff from the house prior to that scene. Again, completely up to you in how you interpret it.

also adding that during my mission to find all these things I noticed that the porch Joel is on in Ellie's last journal drawing is not Joel's front porch but rather the farm's front porch. The front porch at Joel's house doesn't have a drop off so his position wouldn't work there. The vertical post design at Joel's house is also completely different, it's more similar, almost the same to the farm's.

An apparently controversial take: the sequence of events is totally fine in Part II [SPOILERS]

    Posted: 13 Jul 2020 02:13 PM PDT

I've noticed that a lot of the criticism of Part II is leveled at the sequence of events; even among folks who really like the game, this is often cited as the one aspect that people thought was sub-par. These criticisms usually sound something like this:

"The story is good, but if only they had changed the order of Days 1-3 so that Ellie and Abby's parts would be in chronological order, the pacing would be so much better."

This sounds almost as silly as saying that Pulp Fiction should be in chronological order. Both stories were so clearly designed to be told in a certain order, and changing that order would just ruin them.

The sequence of events in Part II was chosen specifically to give the player just the right amount of information. During Ellie's part, we only get drip-fed little tidbits about the world, like notes about the beginning of the WLF or Seraphite graffiti and human pinatas. In other words, we're exploring and discovering Seattle right along with Ellie. If we knew a bunch of extra information from playing as Abby then we wouldn't be as invested in Ellie's journey.

One of the most memorable moments of the game for me was when Ellie first meets the Scars and gets shot with the arrow out of nowhere. If the game had been in chronological order, we would already have killed tons of Scars as Abby, and we would already know all about them from the dialogue between the WLF people. The creepiness and mystery in Ellie's confrontations with the Scars would be totally destroyed.

Another problem with chronological ordering is that Ellie and Abby's stories are so divergent. We're invested in Ellie's search for Abby because for all we know, she's right around the corner; but if we know that Abby's off somewhere else, that tension kind of disappears.

Personally, I love the way the decided to tell the story; the game respects you enough to not just spoon feed everything to you. I'd love to hear other people's opinions too.

    Abby (spoilers)

    Posted: 13 Jul 2020 07:34 PM PDT

Am I the only person on the planet who really liked Abby? I can't believe all the the hate and troll comments towards the character/actress.

I appreciate killing the loveable major character from the franchise is going to warrant some backlash. After 'that' scene I wanted Abby dead and couldn't wait to get my hands on her.

But as the story progressed, you learn that Abby's actions were justified and Ellie would have done exactly the same thing. In fact what Ellie does is worse. She kills off the entire of Abby's group of friends and family, whereas Abby killed Joel in justified revenge and spares Ellie TWICE. Abby is a good person and it would be easy to have killed Tommy and Ellie too, but she let them live because they didn't deserve to die.

After playing Abby's campaign I grew to really like this character. She's not just a cheap villain like the game sets her up to be. Her story has depth and to be honest I much preferred playing as Abby than I did Ellie. Her story was gripping to me, not to mention the gameplay was much better as Abby.

I was RELIEVED at the end when Ellie let Abby go. I didn't want to mash square and drown her I wanted to let her go haha.

It's a shame that so many people don't read deeper into the story and just want Abby dead for killing Joel, and behave like idiots sending abuse to Naughty Dog. It's absolutely ridiculous.

I loved Abby and I hope she comes back for the next game.

Shoutout to an underrated mechanic they use to breathe more life into Ellie...

    Posted: 13 Jul 2020 08:17 AM PDT

...that freaking Journal. Abby don't get that. Ellie's journal is such a fascinating way to peek into her mind and get a sense of how she is and what she's thinking in the moments etc. I thought that was a brilliant idea and what a great game to make use of that mechanic in. It's the sort of feature that only Video Games can do in any form of story telling. Not all viewers/players will read all that stuff.

I especially appreciate that throughout the game she cannot bring herself to finish drawing Joel especially his eyes but as a little hidden thing, easily missable, when Ellie approaches the empty house. Though you can't access your backpack if you hold the touchpad you can still whip out the notebook and if you go to the final page you can see she's finally been able to draw Joel in all his glory. On his porch, happy. Which says a lot about Ellie and how far she's come in dealing with loss. It only feeds into the whole, leaving the guitar behind and moving on thing. I love this game. Haha.

Also, shoutout to all the collectables in the game that give light on other things that happen in the game. Like Isaac's leadership and past, or those 4 runaways that attack you on the workbench or insight into the seraphites etc. etc. All really cool details that I certainly appreciated reading though! Nifty little things like that make the world seem so much deeper. Props Naughty Dog!

Abby at the end of the game

    Posted: 13 Jul 2020 02:47 PM PDT

Seeing Abby tied to this post made me pity her. This badass warrior who killed thousands of people and monsters, and survived so long. When she was enslaved and tied to the post, she looked so vulnerable. When I saw the other people tied to the post, I wondered, what was these peoples lives? Were they also warriors?

I didn't think I'd like Abby. I was bitter about Joel but playing Abby made me like her character and I liked the supporting characters (especially Lev), so I found it extra hard to do this journey to see her tied to the post.
