My dad started playing The Last of Us. Wish him luck on his introduction to video games!!

Fun Fact! The woman in the first trailer is played by Laura Bailey, who voiced Nadine Ross in Uncharted 4 and some background characters in The Last of Us!

The Last of Us Part II hate has shown the worst of the gaming community

    Posted: 13 May 2020 07:58 PM PDT

It's been so disappointing to see so many people turn their backs on the game and the developers. Really unfair to be so hateful of something that hasn't even released, shit on years of work because of a leak and ruin the excitement for everyone else. Who cares what was leaked? Get over yourself, play the game first and then make an opinion. Really shows how toxic the gaming community can be sometimes.

The outrage honestly makes me more excited

    Posted: 13 May 2020 08:38 PM PDT

Still haven't been spoiled, but the fact that so many people are outraged seems to indicate that the writers have taken risks with the story. I would much rather play an incredibly dark and risky story than one that panders to the fans and takes no risks.

One of my favorite moments in all of fiction is the Red Wedding in Game of Thrones. If you were to tell people about that moment with no context, people would say it's horrible writing, but because the moment made logical sense and was built up to fantastically, it was incredibly shocking, emotional and effective.

The writers have said again and again that this game is about examining the cycle of hate and violence. A happy story would make no sense.

I've never been more excited than I am now.

Ellie - The Last of Us

    Posted: 13 May 2020 07:15 PM PDT

So, I realized something after rewatching one of my favorite movies of 2019.

    Posted: 13 May 2020 09:51 PM PDT

Joker 2019 is one of my favorite movies. The reasons I like it are similar to why I like TLOU. I'll admit it's not a perfect movie, but it's still in my favorites because it is thought provoking and a harsh depiction of reality.

I hope everyone remembers the discourse about this movie before, during, and after it's release, if not here are some refreshers:

Before: The premise was met with serious caution by fans of the character because the Joker never had an origin and that is part of what most people like about the character. About a month before the movie released some story leaked and the media, haters, and facebook weirdos jumped to say negative things about the movie before anyone even had seen it. Remember, it was shown in film festivals (and won awards) and everyone who actually saw it thought it was incredible.

We have a similar situation with TLOU2 now. The people who have played it say it's incredible, better than the first, divisive in the best of ways. People who are attached to the project have publicly backed the game. The people who have seen spoilers also feel some type of way about the plot points but this sub is aware plot points do not make a game.

During: The discourse quickly became polarized because people who hated on Joker 2019 prior to the release never saw the movie and Major news outlets were telling people to stay away from theatres because there would be a shooting. These groups also said that the movie was extremely violent and morally bankrupt (and they still hadn't seen it). People who went to the theaters were either moved or underwhelmed. The movie was not super violent, it did not push an incel agenda and to the dismay of said Major news outlets, no one was harmed watching it.

We can all probably guess that things will be similar with TLOUP2. We can feel it coming. All of us are going to play the game Day 1. All the haters trashing and spoiling this game are not. Makes no sense any way, why would they pay $60 for a game they have an agenda against when they can just lie and say they played. What will happen is they will try to trash the game even after the release as we make up our own minds.

After: Joker 2019 went on to break records, make money, and Win major awards.

I'm going to take a wild guess and say that things will be the same for Naughty Dog. There track record will be stronger than ever after this.

TL;DR: The prerelease discourse around TLOUP2 is similar to the prerelease Joker 2019 discourse.

Edit: Also, some fringe people said the movie had an Incel Agenda... sounds familiar 😉

Don't know if this has been found before but this is my first time seeing it. Standing in this spot at the University makes Joel's hair go white.

LGBT characters in video games are nothing new. Why all of a sudden are people acting as if TLOU2 is somehow a modern "forced agenda" that is recent in games or that Neil is the only dev to do it?

[NO SPOILERS] Sony has released Part 1 of a 4 part video series on TLOU2 and as requested it has been added to the spoiler-free site. I'll make sure to keep this updated when the other 3 parts release. On a side note, thank you for the support, I'm glad I can help! :)
