An error netted me the Collector’s Edition for free. Some say it’s heresy to open these things, but I disagree. It’s awesome.

One of the reasons I love what Naughty Dog did with The Last of Us Part 2

    Posted: 02 Sep 2021 02:07 PM PDT

I know it may seem obvious, but one of the reasons I'm so proud of the company for what they did with Part 2 is because of how they challenged us, the gamers.

All this thought I had started because I remember that long ago I saw in videogamedunkey's The Last of Us 2 review, a clip from this youtuber "Amazing Lucas" blaming Naughty Dog of having "betrayed the fanbase". "Betrayed". Never laughed so hard.

Damn, if there's one thing Naughty Dog really did with this game was challenging us and trusting us, not betraying us! They respected the fanbase so much and saw how much love we had for the first game, they said "Let's see if they can handle Part 2".

Betraying or disrespecting us would have been if we got a conventional fan-service story. They weren't going for the money while making the game, or to maintain players' loyalty by giving the story they wanted. Instead they put all their trust in our good judgement, thinking everyone would respect the quality of the game despite having a bad or good story and respect the hard working developers who put their sweet and blood on making it.

This is why I feel so angry against all those Tlou2 haters, whom you can't discuss with, or who start making nicknames for Druckmann which I don't even want to mention.

I love how Naughty Dog always covers the little details (part 2 spoilers)

    Posted: 02 Sep 2021 10:36 AM PDT

We know how detailed Naughty Dog goes for their games. Their details rival a lot of studios to a whole other level in so many cases. Especially in the last of us part 2. It really felt like final piece of the naughty dog puzzle being placed a league above many.

A lot of people had a problem with how Abby just stumbled onto Joel (which she did. It's the point and why she was so shocked when Tommy says their names.) But I love how Naughty Dog covered that point! When you play as Abby for the first time, Owen points out he saw an armed patrol heading up to the ski lodge (which Abby was going to use to get information about Joel.)

But if you view it from Ellie's perspective when you look out with Dina in the patrol section, if you look up towards the ski lodge Ellie will say something like "that's the ski lodge, the one on Tommy and Joel's route". So we'd knew they were heading towards there and it wasn't just a coincidence that they were there.. that it was THEIR route.

And then if you look back when you are in the ski lodge, 2 years before in the finding strings chapter Ellie asks "why do you always do this route?" when she looks at the book, Meaning Tommy and Joel's favourite patrol route is the one that includes the Ski Lodge.

It wasn't as simple as "oh.. we just needed Tommy and Joel up in the ski lodge for this section.. uhh, yeah let them do that patrol instead, it's fine. No one will question it." They actually added all that detail into the ski lodge route and Tommy and Joel loving that route so no wonder they took it if there was a slight infected problem on the route. And I love that about how naughty dog make their games.

[Spoilers for both games] Abby's story is similar to whole The Last of Us part 1.

    Posted: 02 Sep 2021 06:56 AM PDT

The whole Abby's Seattle day's are copy and past of first game. Most part.

First game we start as Joel who's hanging around with a companion. Tess.

Second game we play as Abby whos hanging around with her companions. Mel, Manny and doge.

Later both meet with a little dude who's very different from anyone. Ellie is immune and Lev was part of seraphites (and few other things).

Later woman dies. Yara and Tess. Little dudes are very upset. Ellie and Lev.

Then time to fight with crazy folk. David's group of cannibals and the seraphites.

Both places are on fire the David's village and village of seraphites.

Then comes time to kill some fireflies. In the first game its in the end and in second one its during the attack on village of seraphites.

Similar boss fight right before character swap. Ellie vs David. Abby vs Ellie. After that in part 1 we play as Joel and in part 2 as Ellie again.

Part 1 in the end we play as Ellie for very short time. Part 2 we play as Abby for very short time.

Joel and Abby use weapons that Ellie does not.

Let's keep things civil its just a discussion of a game. Dont comments negative stuff or threatenings towards me, its just a game and something i realized and wanted to share.

    Crying

    Posted: 02 Sep 2021 10:37 AM PDT

I have waited and waited to play this game. My daughter just turned 14 and I thought it was finally time to play it with her. We are just getting started when Joel's daughter gets shot and dies and my daughter heads upstairs crying.....I'm not sure if we are going to make it thru this or not. :/

    My Hot Take on Tommy

    Posted: 03 Sep 2021 12:14 AM PDT

There's no way I could "win" this argument since the game has a very specific story to tell, but I think it's great fodder for discussion. I think crippled Tommy could've gone after Abby again if he really wanted to.

Obviously, that was never a real possibility, I wanna make that very clear, but I think that's more because of narrative purposes concerning Ellie, one of the game's two central protagonists and PCs, and not really about Tommy being handicapped.

Yeah, he's missing an eye, and his leg was kinda messed up, but he seems well enough to travel since he made it home to Jackson at all and is able to visit Dina and Ellie by himself.

He wouldn't be an effective sniper, which the game relegates most of his combat proficiency to, but that's not the only way he knows how to do damage.

He's obsessed with revenge. He was still trying to track down Abby for months, and it's implied this obsession was what drove him and Maria apart. It makes me wonder if he was alienated from the rest of the rest of the people in Jackson as well. It's possible he still has a leadership role in Jackson and that could've kept him from leaving, personally I honestly doubt it but unfortunately there's no way to be sure. I guess, if nothing else, he values his own continued survival, but how fulfilling would that life really be when your obsession for revenge puts you at odds with everyone around you?

I just find it hard to believe that he truly, 100% thought he couldn't go. I always figured he was manipulating and guilting Ellie into doing it because she obviously had a better practical chance at pulling it off. But if she hadn't gone after all, I just find it hard to believe that he wouldn't eventually try to stake out on his own anyway.

He might not know about the ultimate fate of the Seraphites or the WLF (both of which pretty much killed eachother off), but given the information he gives Ellie on Abby and Lev's whereabouts, he could reasonably assume that they're no longer affiliated with either faction, so that could make his job somewhat easier.

There's obviously the issue of dealing with infected and other survivors on his travels, let alone the Rattlers, but given how consumed he is by revenge, and what little in life I would think he has left, I still find it baffling that he wouldn't give it a second shot if push really came to shove.

Like, even Yara, who traveled with Abby no more than a full day after having her arm freshly cut off, didn't seem to have much stopping her from helping Abby mow her way through Seraphites as needed to rescue Lev, though you could chalk that up to segregation of story vs gameplay. Though by the same token both Ellie and that one Rattler both get punctured by arrows as well in-story (since there's no way to avoid getting shot by them the first time Ellie encounters the Seraphites) and it doesn't seem to hinder them in the long-term.

What do you think? If Ellie hadn't gone after Abby again, do you think Tommy would've eventually tried again?
