The one TLOU2 criticism I don't get it...

... is the idea the game wants us to hate Joel and think Abby is justified in killing him. I've seen this so many times and it's just not backed up at all in the game.

Spoilers for Game of Thrones' finale and The Last Jedi (just to be safe for those living under a rock)

'Game of Thrones' ended with Daenerys after several seasons of being a hero becoming the villain, committing mass genocide and having to be put down. 'The Last Jedi' had Luke Skywalker becoming a failure and exiling himself as a hermit for years. Those are legitimate in my mind examples of taking a heroic protagonist figure and sullying them.

There is nothing like that for Joel in 'Part II'. Yes he has a horrific death but the game never vindicates Abby in killing him or suggest he got what he deserved (we get Abby's perspective but that's not the same thing). Throughout the rest of the game we have flashbacks that just further cement him as being a loving and sympathetic character. Ellie feels betrayed by him saving her but the end of the game reveals that she was looking to forgive him. There's nothing that goes "Joel was a bad person and you should feel bad for rooting for him". There are so many ways they could have done that if they wanted to but they never did.

I 100% get why people hate Joel's fate and I'm not too crazy about it either but the idea that the game ruined his character akin to the prior examples just doesn't make sense to me. Joel is still the same character that he was in the first game.
