It's not whether Sony could release The Last of Us 2 digitally, it's whether it should

It still says I have my pre order

    Posted: 15 Apr 2020 09:35 PM PDT

So apparently since the game got delayed, TLOU2 was taken off the PlayStation store and pre orders were pretty much cancelled. But my library says I still have it and it comes out in 42 days. I thought the pre order would be cancelled and I'd get a refund. Does anyone else still have their pre order? Or understand what's going on?

PlayStation’s network could easily support digital only release

    Posted: 15 Apr 2020 09:33 PM PDT

One leading argument against a digital only release - that PlayStation's digital infrastructure may not be equipped for such a task - is being drastically overblown.

In fact, recent figures indicate PlayStation network can handle serious traffic.

The top-selling PS4 exclusive, Marvel's Spider-Man, sold 3.3 million copies in its first three days. While Sony doesn't provide a physical/digital breakdown for individual game sales, it did report that in FY18, digital downloads accounted for 37% of all game sales (that figure is even higher now btw)

Using that figure, you could roughly estimate that Spider-Man was downloaded 1.2 million times in just days.

But even more demonstrative of PlayStation's robust digital infrastructure is Warzone.

Warzone was downloaded 6 million times across all platforms (PS4, Xbox, and PC) in 3 days. While it's impossible to know the exact download figure for each platform, Modern Warefare sold more copies on PS4 than on Xbox and PC, so it should easily make up 1/3 of the 6 million downloads, if not more.

So, we can roughly assume that 2 million PlayStation users downloaded Warzone in three days (in all likelihood the true figure is even higher). And this is a big file, folks. For those who hadn't purchased MW, the download was 80-100 gb.

With that said, let's assume Part II becomes the fastest selling PS4 exclusive ever, hitting ... maybe 4 million units in three days (obviously we can't know the exact figure but this is reasonable given previous PS4 titles)

If PlayStation WERE to do a digital only release, that DOES NOT MEAN that every person who was going to buy the game physically will suddenly agree/be able to buy digital. There will be a sizeable number of people who wait. In other words, if the game were on track to sell 4 million in three days across digital and physical, a digital only release would see less purchases.

Taking this into consideration, let's say Part II will sell 3 million digital copies in three days. While probably breaking records, this is not a number that is going to break the network.

In fact, I can't find a case where the PlayStation network has crashed as a result of a single game launch, at least not in recent years.

TLDR: The PlayStation network has endured huge digital sales during short periods of time, most notably during the launch of Warzone. It has also never crashed as a result of a game launch. While Part II may break sales records, it's much less likely to break the network.

    NEW TLoU LORE DISCOVERY

    Posted: 15 Apr 2020 06:04 PM PDT

The fungus can grow on and infect metal. Ever seen a pair of broken scissors in our world? Like, ever? Didn't think so. The only explanation for the broken scissors everywhere in-game is that the fungus killed those poor innocent beings.

How might this affect gameplay or story in the second game?

If life was like the last of us and your very first death in the game (that you remember) was how it ended for you, how far would you have gotten?

    Posted: 15 Apr 2020 08:57 AM PDT

If imma be real with y'all, the very first time I ever played, I died in the prologue with Sarah in my arms. I did the mistake of looking back. I wouldn't survive for long.

Waiting for The Last Of Us Part II - Ellie' Song

    Posted: 15 Apr 2020 03:44 PM PDT

Finished tlou for the second time.

    Posted: 15 Apr 2020 10:59 AM PDT

I'm 15 and really really into story games, the last of us is by far one of my favorites. I played tlou like 3 years ago when i was 12 so i didn't care too much about the story and just wanted to kill zombies etc, now that i finished it for a second time ( i forgot about 80% of the game ) I almost immediately want to pre order tlou part 2. The ending gave me goosebumps and i don't really know if Joel made the right decision killing all of the fireflies. But then again he lost Sarah in a horrible way and i read somewhere that he tried to kill himself already, so i guess this kinda was the right thing because otherwise Joel couldn't have lived with himself. Overall i just fucking love this game and definitely going for the platinum soon.
