What I Love About Ellie's Combat In The Last Of Us Part II

    Posted: 11 Mar 2020 03:24 PM PDT

I LOVE how Ellie's fighting style differs from Joel's. She's not an Atomic Blonde type barely staggered by direct hits who overpowers men twice her size. This is NOT to say women can't fight men.

Most of the time, however, the strongest woman still won't match, let alone beat an average man in a contest of muscle or endurance. The few individuals who can are the exception that proves the rule.

Such women do NOT set the standard and imo shouldn't be how females are represented in realistic combat (even in fictional games) because it perpetuates ignorance and sets unrealistic expectations.

What makes this so visceral is that Ellie is clearly affected by every hit (even if gameplay allows her to take a couple-few punches or stabs without losing consciousness). You see the pain on her face.

She knows she can't brute-force many foes like Joel and expertly compensates for her smaller frame, instead fighting smarter (speed, agility, waits for openings, attacks joints, often keeps her distance).

Granted, Joel could be played this way too in the original but his move-set fundamentally carried more emphasis on strength. Ellie by contrast is equally ferocious, but more conservative.

Another important factor is that there's currently a lot we still don't know about who Joel was before outside the original's opening. This is not to take away from the sh*t Ellie's already been through at all.

From early childhood into her teens, she's had to struggle to survive and never had a true home since she moved from place to place so much. She never knew her parents, no stable family.

Everyone she ever trusted or cared about has died, betrayed her, or abandoned her. She was almost killed so many times + nearly raped once by David. Worse, the Fireflies targeted her.

She saw more hell by the age of 14 than the majority of us experience in a lifetime. Joel, however, was older and had been through so much more. Losing a child trumps all of it imo.

It's only natural in this context that Ellie wouldn't be a killer on his level yet, she's currently only a 19 year old girl (I don't consider 19 an adult). As said, she'll likely never have his raw strength.

This is one more reason her gameplay is refreshing. She's still a rookie compared to Joel, but will face greater challenges than he ever did. It's a compelling juxtaposition from the original.

I really hope this sequel may eventually give us some prequel DLC about a bit of Joel's dark past surviving with Tommy. It'd be great to see Tess again too, maybe explore their relationship.

Comment below, do you agree or disagree? What do you like about what we've seen in The Last of Us Part II's combat? What do you like about Ellie in this sequel? Feedback is welcome!

What's Your Most Profound TLOU Moment?

    Posted: 11 Mar 2020 06:47 PM PDT

Hi there...new to reddit, but not new to The Last of Us. I'm finishing up my Grounded+ run to get in the right headspace for the sequel. I've played this game at least 6 times, but it's my first play in a few years. And...I just...

There are tense moments. There are moments of rage, too. But, for me, the most friggin' profound experience every time I play is the giraffe scene. It takes my breath away, and I always shed a few tears. Initially, something is so heartbreaking about how Joel and Ellie are interacting in that bit. There's a lot of trauma, and he's lost as to how to get her back to who she was before winter. She's absent and he's prattling to ease the mood. They've switched roles. There's nothing but pain behind her eyes. At one point he attempts to boost her and she's so caught up in her own thoughts that he has to get her attention. It's shocking to Joel and it's just as jarring to the player.

And then...those giraffes come by. The music starts, and she expresses this moment of pure, childlike wonder running after them. They watch them pass...they have this beautiful moment, and then, they're gone.

For some reason, this time when I was playing, I really understood the finality as that last giraffe grazed out of view. It's like, whatever sense of innocence she had leaves with them. She's saying goodbye to the child inside her, and it's never coming back. All the while, Joel is just watching the metamorphosis. She'll recover in time, but that part is gone forever.

I just...this game never fails to astound me. I'm rambling. What's your most profound moment in TLOU?

I had a... dream the other day

    Posted: 11 Mar 2020 09:24 PM PDT

I dreamed about part II, and here is how it went:

The game started with no context, I couldn't tell if I was thrown into a random mission or it was actually the beginning. There was this big field with dry grass, in the middle lied an old wooden building. It reminded me of the sawmill from days gone. Some trees marked the edges of the map and the sun was slowly approaching the horizon.

I made a quick image to give the idea of the scenery, credits to days gone

There were 3 characters traversing the field, Ellie and 2 other unknown dudes. Joel was nowhere to be found.

The level started with a cutscene, the characters discussing something but I couldn't make out what they were talking about. After that I could control Ellie so I walked in the grass field but after just a few steps another cutscene played where the characters approached the building. Ellie was very quiet and didn't talk much. And when she did it felt like she had lost all he personality. Didn't swear once, was always calm and monotone, seemed like a side character.

Finally it was time to enter the building, and it was filled with infected, but I didn't get to "play" that part, I just "knew" they were inside, you know how dreams work yeah?

After clearing the building (or attempting it) there would have been another cuscene but I woke up before that could happen.

    SUMMARY:

So in general, it was very disappointing. Ellie changed so much for the worse it wasn't even funny. There were too many (short) cuscenes one after the other and the side characters were so forgettable I didn't even know who they were or what they were doing. Joel was nowhere to be found which reminded me of how we all felt when he would always be missing from the trailers/news prior to the last trailer.

I was happy to wake up when I did.

So... have you had dreams about part II? I hope good ones! Please share your stories :)

    One problem with the game...

    Posted: 11 Mar 2020 05:52 PM PDT

That final firefly surgeon who immediately rag dolls wherever you hit him is such a bummer! The first time I finished the game I aimed my gun at him for so long and finally carefully aimed to disarm him and still he dropped like a brick. Now on every play-through I go to such lengths to shoot him in a non critical area even though I know he'll always die.

I'm fine with not giving the player a choice and I'm even okay with Marlene dying but do I always have to murder this doctor?! He doesn't try and shoot Joel, he doesn't jump to stab Joel, from his perspective he just heard a ton of gun fire down the hall and now a maniac with a FLAMETHROWER on his back barged into his operating room. Of fucking course he's pointing a scalpel!
