Narrative informed by gameplay: a brief look at player death in the last of us

    Posted: 06 Dec 2019 05:57 PM PST

Throughout the campaign of the last of us, Joel reiterates to other characters how dangerous and unforgiving the landscape of the world is. How it is simply through luck, that they have survived as long as they have. As a player, I believed him and felt scared for these characters' survival at every stage in their journey. Why is that?

Well, for a lot of reasons. The level and sound design along with pretty much everything else gameplay-wise. All strive to communicate the hopelessness and danger of the world the player is in. However, I want to look at how player death does this. In particular, how reaffirms the characters' belief about the danger present in the world of the last of us.

The death animations are particularly brutal in the last of us. We see the characters we have come to care for, be torn to shreds because of a simple misstep alerting a runner. Or a wandering clicker that we were unaware of getting too close. This imagery of characters being physically broken is coupled with a screeching industrial whining sound and a final scream of the affected character. The game lingers on this, before a sharp a cut to black. It makes death something that carries more weight than just gameplay set back. It provides a narrative consequence for the players' actions, what if the stories of these characters ended, just like that.

So, when Joel says that the characters have survived thus far out of luck, and are just barely surviving. We as the player believe him because we have seen all the ways it could have gone wrong. Our gameplay reinforces the attitude that the characters have towards the world, immersing us (or myself, at least) further within the story of the last of us.

Admittedly, this is just one small way that the game creates an atmosphere and serves the story of the last of us, but it was one that stuck with me throughout my playthroughs as memorable.

    Completion trophies

Do the grounded trophies stack considering they are on a separate trophy list, like if you complete survival mode you'll get all lower completion trophies, or are grounded indeed completely separate?

I hope you don’t actually have to crouch down to drop items like this, I think you should be able to while running
