I just came onto this subreddit.

Like i keep doing on a weekly basis. Tonight i drank a bit of whiskey playing days gone on ps4. I mean, the game passes the time, and the hordes are a cool thing to experience. And i know, it's open world, whereas the tlou series isn't. But still, the polish and attention to detail that ND put into this franchise is nothing short of amazing. And the music. Oh man, it's amazing. But what blows my mind, is that every aspect comes together in a way that is two steps higher than every other game i've played in a looong time. This is the only game where i literally had to TAKE A WALK when i completed it. Anyway, i'm just drunk, and probably just wishing i could play the games for the first time again.

EDIT: Oh, and the people who keep posting mindblowing artwork and cosplays, you guys are so god damn awesome ♡

Being motivated by anger is NOT unrealistic in this setting, and I'm tired of people pretending it is

    Posted: 23 May 2021 09:23 AM PDT

This is a common misconception that some detractors tend to use and abuse to find a reason to criticize the themes that the game tackles on. And for this, they use the words of Bruce Straley, who said the following about a scrapped revenge plot for the original game.

Who was the antagonist in that iteration?

Druckmann: Tess was the antagonist chasing Joel, and she ends up torturing him at the end of the game to find out where Ellie went, and Ellie shows up and shoots and kills Tess. And that was going to be the first person Ellie killed. But we could never make that work, so…

Straley: Yeah, it was really hard to keep somebody motivated just by anger. What is the motivation to track, on a vengeance tour across an apocalyptic United States, to get, what is it, revenge? You just don't buy into it, when the stakes are so high, where every single day we're having the player play through experiences where they're feeling like it's tense and difficult just to survive. And then how is she, just suddenly for story's sake, getting away with it? And yeah, the ending was pretty convoluted, so I think Neil pretty much hammered his head against the wall, trying to figure it out. I think he came up with a good, really nice, simplified version of that, and it worked out. --> 2013 Empire Interview

However, in doing so, they completely misinterpret the reason why it didn't work in the first game. The key aspect that made the first abandoned plot unbelievable was the sheer scale that Tess would have to cover to keep up with Joel and Ellie: the first game had the protagonists go from Boston to Salt Lake City, which is like 3/4 of the way across the US. How does one follow across a revenge thread across the US with so many turns, so many infected, and so few people in between? That's something extremely difficult to push for someone purely motivated by anger.

The Last of Us Part II is a different scenario, since the essential part of its story takes place in a single city, which means the scale is nowhere near the same as the one in the first game. Now, let's take a deeper look at the protagonists:

    • In a flashback, Abby has mentioned that all the leads are dried up, which is why she doesn't blindly try to come after Joel, but knowing that he is still out there is still eating her alive inside. Then, we eventually learn in another flashback how exactly Abby found Joel: she has learned that Tommy lived at Jackson, she immediately ask for Isaac's approval and gathered everybody to hunt him down.

    • On Ellie's side, her varying motivation to chase after Abby are closely related to her knowledge on her whereabouts, even if they're not necessarily the only reasons for this evolution. At the beginning, she already knew that Abby was living in Seattle thanks to her posse's identifying patches. But throughout the three days, all their leads have eventually dried up when Abby was nowhere to be found at the aquarium, and she ended up having to kill the only ones who could have told them where she was. This leads Ellie and the others to (more or less reluctantly) leave Seattle for Dina's sake. The day after Tommy comes knocking at her door with information on Abby's whereabouts, what does she do? She immediately packs her things up and leaves to come after her.

I say all this to further drive this point home: Bruce Straley's problem with the story was about how unrealistic someone aimlessly chasing somebody throughout the entire United States with the mere motivation of killing them, rather than revenge being supposedly incompatible to a post-apocalyptic setting.

Hell, if anything, a world without any judicial system to either punish the target of the revenge (which feeds into their frustration at this perceived impunity) or revenger themselves (which means they're not held back by any higher authority), makes The Last of Us the perfect setting for revenge. We're talking about a world in which inside quarantine zones, people are oppressed by a brutal martial law. And outside of quarantine zones, people routinely hurt each other to take whatever the other has, be it a safehaven, supplies, or even their lives if they don't shy away from cannibalism or slavery.

Is it really that hard to believe such a world could cause further tribal violence or hatred towards one another?

Going back to replay some chapters and I accidentally saved over my 100% upgrades NG+ because I flaked out on the warning prompt and thought I was loading it.

    Fuck.

    Fuck fuck fuck.

I don't know about you guys/gals but of the few flaws this game has, NOTHING irritates me more than their janky ass "play-any-chapter-or-encounter-but-no-upgrades-unless-you-constantly-remember-to-reload-complete-saves" shit.

And now I fucked up because I fell asleep at the switch.

Welp......I've been considering an 8th playthrough on infinite ammo anyway....

Is it me or is the TvTropes YMMV vary page of TLoU2 still heavily biased towards negativity? It even refers to The Angry Joe Review as "succinct" and lacks a "Complaining about shows you don't watch" which would be a shoo in
