What Almost Was: Everything To Learn From LOU2's Concept Art Posted: 16 Mar 2021 11:08 AM PDT Hi guys, just thought I'd make a list of every observation made by looking closely at the game's concept art. I'm aware lots of these were just designed for mood and perhaps not indicative of the plot or sincerely of making it into the game but I have applied my own analysis, along with what the creators and actors have said, to hopefully bring some cool stuff to light. I have highlighted with *** what I feel is most interesting or accurate. If you have any more observations, put them below! Jackson: - Joel was supposed to lose a hand, be paralysed with a knife in his back or lose an eye originally. We now know the golf club thing came from Druckmann's real life experience of someone catching him on the back swing. Ellie Day 1 - Dina and Ellie were supposed to fight infected on horseback beneath the bridge, which others have assumed was in Jackson. It was the earliest image we saw of Ellie and Dina, and many of us assumed this was a Jackson patrol. - At one stage it seems Dina and Ellie could duel wield, with an image showing one hand with a machete and one with a short knife (that looks nothing like Ellie's knife) - It seems Ellie was to encounter more flood based obstacles, as the art really makes a deal of how the light interacts with the rivers and showing settlers and infected on a beach by a dilapidated church - *** The Capitol Hill section seemingly was supposed to originally have a much grimmer greyer atmosphere, which I assume they changed so we could slide down into the storm - In two images— one where Ellie is tied up under Jordan and one where Ellie finds the arrow ridden body— she is wearing a white shirt and has hair more like the first game. Maybe a placeholder, but could've been an early outfit? It reoccurs throughout - *** The concept image for Ellie and Dina's escape from the tunnel into the theatre actually shows Ellie severely injured— bleeding from the stomach, blood in her eyes— being helped by a young Asian woman. I presume this was Cat, as other photos seem to indicate the Jackson group was a 4 rather than a trio. The fact Cat is holding an injured Ellie as they're chased also demonstrates this scene was thought of well before they knew Dina was going to be pregnant. - It seems Ellie and Joel were almost older in the birthday flashback and could ha e included hunting in marshes, because they're shown to be armed with rifles as they wade Ellie day 2 - *** During the Jesse rescue, one particular image shows Dina (with her former concept art nose) holding Cat by the arm with blood pouring down her face and down her left arm, whilst Jesse and Ellie shoot into the dark. The lighting is similar to the seraphire chapter and in the woods are orange lights that appear to be seraphite torches. - Again, it seems Ellie was almost older in the Finding Strings flashback. One particular shot shows Joel and Ellie overlooking a small broken house— perhaps it belonged to Joel's cut girlfriend, Esther? - *** Ellie walks through a hospital after her first seraphite encounter— a badly infected overgrown ward. I assume the original idea was for her to go to Ground Zero, not Abby. - *** The last photo is of a woman tied to a tree whilst Ellie's hand holds a knife... I assume the torture of Nora was originally going to be a bit more explicit... Ellie day 3 - *** Road to the aquarium shows Cat patching up Ellie, in a scene that was clearly repurposed earlier on in the story after Ellie got back from Hillcrest - *** There's a picture of Ellie on the boat wearing a much browner jacket, but it has a hood and I saw the same brown in a picture of her ducking from a seraphite with her bow out... was she originally going to disguise herself? Maybe this ties into how Ellie was originally going to be shipwrecked on scar island, back when the game was 5 days long - There's one kind of baffling picture of Mel and Owen lying dead, whilst someone grieves them with their head in their hands. Contextually one would believe it was Ellie but they're wearing a sweater vest and a buttoned up crisp white shirt, if just doesn't look like her and nor do the two people in the background look much like Jesse or Tommy... The Park - *** Abby seemingly had some different motifs going: muscly from a younger age, younger than Ellie in the flashback playing chess with her dad, a scene in her bedroom looking out of the window seemed to be planned? Abby day 1 - *** it looks like Abby and Owen were originally on the patrol ride together as we can see him drinking a beer in the back with her. Maybe he was supposed to sneak off later then? Makes sense they removed him though, since we already got the introduction and Mel needed some development - *** Abby was originally supposed to remove and protect Mel from the destroyed vehicle... her being pregnant seemingly was a lot more of a big dramatic deal - At the forward base we see; a black female sniper covered with camp leaves— maybe an abandoned enemy type— Abby being escorted by Isaac (who then was chubbier and had a walking stick) - *** On Hostile Territory, there's an image of Manny kissing some woman... maybe we were going to have some comedic scene, like the one that opened for Ellie and Jesse? Or maybe Owen once looked a lot more like Manny? - In The Forest, we see Lev was supposed to be a lot younger - In The Coast, we see Abby take off or put on her jacket in front of a shirtless man that looks a lot more like the prototype slimmer, more conventionally handsome Manny - *** At the end, there's a very strange picture of two children— an 11 y/o looking boy and a 6-8 year old looking girl with a knife cutting flowers— they could either be very prototype Yara and Lev but also could be Abby and Owen. In the next picture, the young girl is holding an injured baby goat... Either way, it seems another flashback could've been here, that probably got cut because her saving a baby goat is a bit on the nose for what Abby does for Lev... - *** The final picture is a cropped picture of Yara— with two arms working— chewing a piece of meat whilst Lev's lurking hovers in the background. Behind them is a skinned animal. I assume this was going to be a hard cut from the innocent saving of the baby goat to showing what Yara and Lev have to do to survive. In the context of this picture, I almost think it makes more sense for it to be a Yara and Lev flashback, which could've been cool... who knows, DLC? - *** Return to coast shows Abby with an advanced looking bow and arrow, implying she was supposed to have a WLF issued one rather than a random crossbow Abby Seattle Day 2 art - *** Ellie was supposed to traverse the rapids, rather than Abby— and Ellie apparently was supposed to have her own rope and use it to cross Another image seemingly confirms it was Ellie who was originally supposed to be the one to go to ground zero - *** Art shows a fight with infected in the aquarium, that was apparently supposed to happen Abby day 3 - There are lots of pictures but the first one really shows how Abby's body type really changed a lot. It shows Mel shouting after Lev leaving, implying she might have had some scenes or relationship with him originally? - *** Really interestingly is that the marina art shows Ellie's model, through paths where Abby is sniped and the train station where Abby fights Tommy. Maybe they had this level idea before the Tommy Abby thing, or maybe it's just a placeholder. - The Scars originally looked way more savage and had a lot more scars on their face and tribal tattoos - Yara originally also had a shaved head as we can see in concept art of her fighting without an arm - *** There's a single image of a woman (appears slightly Asian but it's a bad angle) kneeling in the rubble of the island... maybe Lev's mother, seeing what her religion got her? Who knows!? Maybe just a mood piece... - *** One image clearly shows Ellie fighting in the burning docks of Haven: Neil has already confirmed she was originally supposed to go there and see things before it was destroyed back when things were 5 days... but maybe the climax of the game was supposed to take place here rather than in Santa Barbara? There's also one of Ellie or prototype Abby peering around a corner to see a screaming boy being attacked that kind of looks like prototype Lev? The Farm - There's a picture of a wild hog in the forest. Maybe Ellie was supposed to see a wild hog to remind her of the one in the museum? - *** There are images of a cave and a gutted deer; presumably there was going to be a prolonged hunting section— which according to Neil Druckmann involved a bear in which Ellie would savagely kill it and vent out her rage and then have her PTSD triggered, that was acted out and almost ready but cut - *** There's an image of Ellie with her own dog. This matches a lot of pre game concept art of her with a dog and also from the first game's concept art. I have to say I for one am really sad she never got a dog, since I thought Alice was really poorly implemented into the game, especially considering we had already killed shit loads of dogs and by the time we interact with Alice she is already dead...? Santa Barbara - One thing that is quite cool is that they clearly toyed around with Ellie's evolving body types— it looms like she was supposed to be more muscular, perhaps they were going to show how Ellie was becoming more like Abby than she realised but then thought better of the potential social messaging of saying it's bad for women to be buff? - The Rattlers have caged Of naked people outside in the sun... probably too graphic for the game or they'd know people (because video games) would mess around in these very serious scenes? - *** The last picture of the resort shows Ellie walking through a series of tennis courts on the resort with wild animals in the distance— maybe bringing the animal experiences full circle? They look like wild dogs, like the ones Joel saw in the abandoned village... - There's an image of Abby standing looking completely messed up on the beach which mirrors the composition of one from the theatre concept art of Ellie standing in the same position on the defensive with her knife... I assumed they meant to more deliberately visually parallel these fights at first? The Farm - Perhaps the most interesting is the last shots of the dance— which show Joel with who has been theorised to be Esther but I think, having looked at some of the other photos showing early versions of Abby, before the muscles, I assume this was left over from the version of the game where Jackson was open world and the WLF group slowly infiltrated. I mean how much more tense could that be, with her getting to know Joel that intimately and still deciding to kill him. We know the dance was moved around in the plot a lot, almost the first scene, almost last, maybe we originally were going to get a double flashback, one with Ellie and Joel and one with Abby and Joel dancing, seeding her guilt [link] [comments]

Anyone else genuinely heartbroken about Dina Posted: 16 Mar 2021 12:01 PM PDT Especially during that scene where she reveals she's pregnant and Ellie calls her a burden... I stg I always get so sad whenever I watch that considering how we have watched her risk her life for her for the past couple hours so much, so to hear them genuinely fight like that was so sad. It hurt even worse at the end when Ellie left her at the house to go hunt down Abby. Poor Dina has been through so much and didn't deserve anything that happened to her :( [link] [comments]

A Brief Investigation of Joel's Guitar Posted: 16 Mar 2021 11:16 AM PDT I'm a big guitar guy who loved the song Helplessly Hoping even before this game, so needless to say the last scene of Joel playing guitar, in addition to being arguably the most important in the whole game, hit me like a ton of bricks. So I've been very interested in figuring out what guitar he's playing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-zOjVJgIVHA My first thought was Martin, but looking closely it became immediately apparent that the headstock was a Yamaha. Next, after looking at the body of the guitar for a while the strange thing is it doesn't look very much like a Yamaha. The 'shoulders' of the guitar are very broad, and when Joel turns it more towards the camera at the end it appears to be a sunburst with a large, reddish pickcard covered in a design. All these features are trademarks of the Gibson Hummingbird. I'd never heard of Yamaha copying the Hummingbird, but I googled it anyways and turns out they did—just only in the 1970s! Some of the details are different on the various models throughout the decade, but here's one of the closest to Joel's I could find. The three things which vary on these models is whether or not it has a burst finish, whether or not it has 'dot' fret markers like Joel's vs. 'bar' inlays, and whether or not it has the same style of headstock (Yamaha changes theirs more than most.) I couldn't find one that has all three. But even still, the attention to detail here is pretty remarkable, and it's likely canon that Joel is playing a 58-68 year old Yamaha from the '70s. These seem to be rare but when they are for sale they don't seem to go for insane prices (less than $1,000) and having played a dreadnought from the '70s, they sound amazing when they're in good shape. So if you missed out on Ellie's Taylor and our looking for a guitar collectible keep your eye out for one of these! I certainly will. [link] [comments]
Ashley Johnson changed my life (pre-video post explanation\rant) Posted: 16 Mar 2021 07:09 PM PDT All names have been changed for privacy reasons. Please read this in its entirety As I promised I'm going to do an explanation of my video and wolf pack, hopefully, I can do this without crying, here we go buckle up. .My grandmother remembers her in Growing Pains when she was 6 years old, but I met her at the end of my 7th-grade year as Ellie I was 13 at the time. That was also the year I started questioning my sexuality and the year I started my imaginary psychiatric service dog facility. FLW is an imaginary psychiatric service dog facility for fictional characters. It all started when I couldn't get a service dog because our pet dog is dog aggressive. My imagination kind of made my ideal world and I ran with it. My working partner only started a year ago. I have done this for three years by myself. I never said it would be easy, but the relationship between dog and human is what is. This program literally saved my life, so no I don't do this for entertainment. I do it to stay functioning properly and to raise awareness about mental disorders. Hopefully one day I will have a real service dog and psychiatric facility but for now, I am happy with what FLW has achieved over the years, so I will keep training pretend dogs, helping pretend people, and spreading awareness about mental disorders if it means I get to function properly. Joel's death hit me hard, but after I learned about Ashley's father's death for some reason Joel's death hits even harder now. Seeing her cry in the Kinda Funny Games interview and you know what I'm talking about if you've seen it, that clip still hits me like a ton of bricks. I wish I could say "Can you hold me in your arms?" well I tell her that I'm an asexual lesbian since my family believes in lesbians but not asexuals, so I don't trust telling them. I also would tell her that her baby girl is safe with us. Ellie joined FLW in August of 2020 and was paired with a German Shorthaired Pointer male named River. River and her are inseparable; he won't go anywhere without her. Ellie's fight or flight response has gone down significantly, she's gotten two of the shyest program members Wednesday and Angus to come out of their shells, and I always know that she would protect us if we ever needed it. We have a long way to go, but we're making progress and that's what counts. Okay, let's talk about my pack. In the spring of 2017 I added my first pack member, but not officially. See I originally planned for my pack to be a safe place to go to cope with my SPD. My school quickly shut that down saying that it was inappropriate. So I changed my mind and then chose to change it to raising awareness about neurological and mental disorders since I have some myself. Ten of us live in Maryland, and one of us lives in Virginia. In the summer of 2017, I added my first official member then quickly added my non-official member as official. We've been raising awareness for almost four years and went from three pack members to eleven pack members. Even though it is not our main focus we do spread awareness about the LBGTQIA+ community as well. My pack includes Rain, Moon, Koda, Cinder, Alpine, Ivory, Yuka, Spirit, Nikita, Arcadia, and Sumeria. The video is an admission letter into our pack from me, Rain to Ash aka Ashley to come home and join the fight with us. If you have questions about FLW or my pack feel free to ask. Be kind The video will be out on March 26th. [link] [comments]

The Last of Us Part I and II Platinum Trophies (temporary post) Posted: 16 Mar 2021 10:05 AM PDT
Posted: 16 Mar 2021 05:12 AM PDT When you wake up as Ellie after having confronted Tommy on the farm, you can open this little white box and go through Ellie's journal. The page that you first see mentions Ellie hunting a boar. It also says how she cornered the boar at an old gas station. I'm just wondering if that would be the same gas station you ride through as Joel with Tommy at the start of the game. This isn't really an important thing that changes anything big, but I feel like it's a cool little detail ND put in. It might also give us some more insight on where exactly the farm is. I don't know if I sound completely stupid with this, but I just wanted to know all of y'alls thought lol. [link] [comments]

Posted: 16 Mar 2021 09:57 AM PDT ...Running with a girl in your arms. I'm sure this observation has been made before, it feels super obvious in retrospect, but I never noticed the parallel before. I'm probably just a huge idiot, but it actually makes me sympathize with Joel a lot more realizing he's basically reliving the most traumatic experience of his life. This game has a real Greek tragedy level of parallelism, it's very balanced. Also, can I just say fuck shiv doors? This was my first Grounded playthrough and I decided to finally collect all the artifacts too, but missed two shiv doors because I didn't have two "full" shivs, despite not using any on any clickers or anything... Have to go back now, oh well. Given how many times I died, I doubt I could beat Part 2 on Grounded + Permadeath, but I guess I'll try that just to see how far I can get. [link] [comments]
