Playing this game in Survival is all about this, isn’t it?

Inspired by some dude here on this community who did this with carbon paper, i decided to put a sticker of Ellie tattoo on my guitar. Very glad with the result!

One small example of what (in my insignificant opinion) makes Part II great.

    Posted: 15 Oct 2020 07:21 PM PDT

(SPOILERS for Part II and Uncharted 4)

So I finished my second playthrough of this game a while back, and started writing up an extensive analysis because there was SO MUCH discussion going on, and I wanted to contribute. Because there's SO MUCH I've wanted to talk about.

Life has since gotten in the way, and I feel like at this point my wordy critique will simply re-hash so much of what's already been said that it almost seems pointless now. But I feel very strongly about this game still, and maybe I'll finish that write-up yet.

However, I just finished watching Bowlingotter's playthrough on YT (great channel by the way, highly recommend them) and after watching the final fight between Abby and Ellie again, I felt compelled to elucidate what I think is one of the clearest examples of why this game is so special.

(Apologies if this point has already been made, as I didn't search through past posts before writing this.)

Mechanically speaking, that final fight on the beach between Abby and Ellie is heavily reminiscent of the final brawl between Drake and Rafe in Uncharted 4. A melee boss fight where you trade blows and dodge and button mash until you win. Simple.

Don't get me wrong, Uncharted 4 is awesome and that last fight, with the burning pirate ship collapsing around them, is incredibly cinematic and badass in every way.

HOWEVER, not for a single moment during that fight did I feel afraid for Nathan's life (nor Sam's, even though they hinted that he might not make it) and, as great as UC4's story is, there just wasn't a whole lot of emotional investment for me during that final encounter. It only had to be fun...which it was.

Flash forward to the Abby/Ellie beach duel: Never, NEVER, have I felt more tension and dread going into a boss fight than I did when that music kicked in and these two bloodied, traumatized characters charged each other for the last time.

The whole fight was an absolute rollercoaster of emotions (cliché I know), and all I wanted was for the violence to end, and for both of them to walk away with their lives intact. In that final moment, when Ellie has gone as far as she can and is brought back from the very edge by one single memory of Joel smiling, I let out as big a breath as Abby did when she finally came up for air.

The relief I felt in that moment was immeasurable.

And that's just one of the many things that makes this game so special for me. The fact that I became so emotionally invested as to still be ruminating on it to this day, and to still get chills when watching someone else experience those final harrowing moments, is a testament to the sheer impact of the experience ND created.

This isn't a diss on Uncharted 4 of course, I just think that the emotional juxtaposition of these two boss fights, that are otherwise so similar in mechanics and execution, is a perfect example of why The Last of Us Part II is such a milestone in video games.

I felt things while playing it that I've never felt before from a game, and I can't wait to experience it all again on my next playthrough.

    Thanks for reading.

Using the gameplay modifiers are so much fun. There are so many creative ideas you can do with it. I messed around with it in this video.

    I finished Part 2 and…

I've spent the last 13 hours looking for a way to view the ending of the game in a hopeful light. I just absolutely refuse to accept an ending this bleak and depressing. Ellie said in the first game that her biggest fear was ending up alone; I refuse to believe that this was the fate in store for her at the end of this game. So after a lot of searching, I finally came across this theory in the comments section of a YouTube video.

The YouTube video itself was hopeful, but the comments added to it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UJ-Ly__HBJg

Y'all may have seen this theory before, but I really like it, because it makes me think that everything had a happy-ish ending.

Also there's another comment that builds on it with a few extra points.

Curious for everyone's thoughts! I really enjoyed the game, but at the end my cheeks were soaked with tears. I actually don't really cry that much during movies/books/tv shows/games/etc.; the most I've ever gotten was 3 tears from Avengers: Endgame. But The Last of Us 2 had me literally sobbing lol. So anyway, I don't like feeling like shit as much as this game made me feel, so I needed to find an interpretation of the ending that was more hopeful. Curious for everyone's thoughts.

A common criticism concerning a certain enemy faction.

    Posted: 15 Oct 2020 05:03 PM PDT

I've seen and talked to a lot of people who don't like that the game spends so much time humanizing and drawing empathy for the various factions in the game, only to turn around and present the Rattlers as a fully evil, fully expendable group of people. They're basically nazis, in the sense that they're video game enemies that you can have no qualms with disposing of.

I've mulled this over for a while and I have a few points to make:

    1. The game does indeed spend time humanizing individual characters within the Seraphites and the WLF, but it doesn't pull too many punches when it comes to showing how both of these factions are severely morally compromised in a ton of ways. The Seraphites are deeply patriarchal and transphobic (to a murderous degree), and the WLF are xenophobic and authoritarian (also to a murderous degree).
    2. While both of those factions are fucked up in plenty of ways, neither are AS fucked up as the Rattlers, who are literally enslaving people. It sort of comes down to this real-life thing for me where, yeah, sometimes there's a group that has a lot of glaring flaws... and then sometimes there are just nazis (or white supremacists, or slave holders, or any other fully despicable organization). Empathy and understanding the other side are really important things, but sometimes there really are just thoroughly evil people in this world. That's a reality.
    3. As with the rest of the game, you are 100% role playing AS Ellie/Abby throughout the entire experience. When Ellie does awful things, it is ELLIE who is doing those things, because this is a formal story about characters, not some meta commentary about player agency. So when Ellie is in Sarah Connor Terminator 2 mode at the end of Part 2, and she's mowing down wave after wave of the Rattlers, I don't think the game is betraying its own themes because Ellie has almost COMPLETELY lost herself at this point in the story, and she literally doesn't care who she has to hurt or kill to get to Abby. Perhaps ND made the Rattlers so nakedly despicable to help that part of the story be more digestible.

I'm not saying there's nothing to criticize, and I do find myself sort of wishing the game had gone a slightly different way. I've played the game about four times now and every time the Rattlers do feel a little weird to me. Like they come out of left field just a bit too strongly. But I don't think the game is necessarily betraying its own themes by having them be part of the story.

    Thoughts?

Haven't played in a while, but this used to appear when you start a new game. Can't find it in any of the settings either unless I'm missing something.

    Thanks
