The look my brother gave me...

    Posted: 23 Jul 2020 02:11 PM PDT

I just finished the game today, and now he has just begun on his own profile. A while later I walked into the kitchen and he stood there for a few seconds looking at me. I knew exactly what he just played and the emotion was simmering in his eyes.

He just said "I'm taking a break..."

Our mom asked what was wrong and I replied "You wouldn't understand, it's okay."

I've rarely seen him this way, even when grieving real life tragedies. This little moment is a testament to just how hard-hitting this game is. It's amazing, thanks Naughty Dog.

I really enjoyed how fleshed out the human factions/enemies felt in II as opposed to the first game.

    Posted: 23 Jul 2020 09:28 PM PDT

I think TLOU II did a fantastic job showing a diverse range of human groups each with their own personalities and characteristics as opposed to the first game. Don't get me wrong, I thought the human enemies in TLOU were top notch, however, I felt that they mostly melded into a "hostile/hunter thug" type.

For those of you who don't remember here is a list of the human factions you face in TLOU:

    • Robert's Thugs - Just seemed like typical bad guys.

    • FEDRA (government) soldiers - They only appeared for a small part of the game but I thought they had a pretty cool flavor. Gave me very exhausted and depleted authoritarian vibes.

    • Pittsburgh Hunters - These guys seemed to me like a crude version of the WLF (kicked out government, took military hardware) that degenerated into a gang of killers and thieves. I thought they were pretty cool.

    • Jackson Hunters - More typical bad guys

    • David's Group - I thought they came off as just typical hunters, but the discussion during Ellie's escape about David's leadership and the cannibalism angle were neat.

    • Firefiles - Cool paramilitary feel but they were only in the game for a short time.

While Part II only has three factions, Jackson, Seraphites (Scars), and WLF (wolves) I thought they each had a unique personality.

    • Jackson seems like a community of people that banded together to more easily survive. Its a pretty open and friendly town that protects its borders from infected and hunters but will take in other survivors.
    • The WLF started as a paramilitary movement to eject the government from Seattle that, after a long period of brutal fighting, succeeded. They still keep their military structure and organization (I.E. bases, call signs, units) as well as a ton of military hardware like vehicles and weapons but they seem to be prospering in their stadium base. I think their long military struggle against FEDRA (and later the Scar) is one reason for their hostility towards outsiders. They were my favorite faction in II.

    • The Seraphites on the other hand started as a quasi-religious movement that saw the infection as a divine punishment for humanities decadence. I though it was interesting how their prophet was just a "crazy person" who got killed (I'm pretty sure by the WLF) and turned into a martyr/Demi-goddess. I really like their abhorrence of "old world" things and adherence to simple living due to their belief that it is what caused the infection in the first place. My favorite piece of flavor of theirs was how hanging and gutting people was not originally part of their prophets teachings but eventually embraced the violence. Also, I loved how they all wore the same clothes and had the same hairstyles for men and women, super culty.

Anyway that's just my rambling thoughts on how I think they improved the human enemies in the game but cutting down on the variety of groups you face, but really fleshed out the factions in the game.

My thoughts on a common criticism of TLOU2's ending

    Posted: 23 Jul 2020 08:23 PM PDT

There has been a very common criticism that i have seen going around about Ellie letting Abby go. This criticism compares the game to the original God of War Trilogy, essentially saying, "Imagine if Kratos let Zeus go at the end of GOW3"

Actually, if done right, that would've been an interesting way to go about the original games(although we wouldn't have gotten the 2018 one)

First, let me start of by saying that in the god of war games, the gods were shown to be evil. They weren't innocent humans who Kratos killed. Meanwhile, in the Last Of Us, almost every human is morally grey. So, themes of forgiveness work better in this universe rather than in the original GOW trilogy.

More importantly, I believe there are two quotes from Kratos' fight with Baldur in GOW 2018 that I think essentially shut down this criticism.

"This path you walk...vengeance. You will find no peace. I know"

"We must be better than this"

Kratos clearly regrets that he chose that path. Because of vengeance, Kratos lost his humanity, and found no inner peace. On the other hand, Ellie, although at the very last second, decided to "be better", and abandoned that path. As a result of that action, Ellie will be able to find inner peace and regain her humanity, which Kraros struggled to achieve for multiple decades. I am glad that Ellie realized this before and not after she kills abby.

This is also why I think the ending is much more hopeful than most people think.

When did you finally forgive/begin to like Abby?

    Posted: 23 Jul 2020 07:08 PM PDT

For me it's the moment she says to Lev "you're my people" that entire sequence has her turn against Issac and sacrifice herself, and I'd found it really difficult to forgive Abby until that point, however replaying the story I realise Abby has so many great moments before that and I'm wondering if anyone was more or less open to Abby than I was

finally finished my character study of Ellie! I am still not mentally recovered from this game

    Posted: 23 Jul 2020 02:03 PM PDT

TLOU2 is the second game in history that replayed right after I finished.

    Posted: 23 Jul 2020 04:52 PM PDT

The only other game that made me instantly replay it was Uncharted 3 (yup, not 2 and not 4). I was so moved by TLOU2 that I wanted to start the journey all over again. Usually by the end of a game I'm just like.... ugh, just let me finish it so I can play something else, but I just didn't wanna stop playing this game.

Anyone else feel the same way?
