Unpopular Opinion: Naughty Dog should NOT release The Last of Us Part II Digitally and most fans can hardly fathom the technical complications that come along with an early digital release. If that makes you angry, you need to read this post in order for you to understand.

    Posted: 07 Apr 2020 09:42 AM PDT

Let me start off this post by saying *every cell in my body wants to play this game.* I'm an avid poster on this sub, I don't miss a single day because my excitement for this game is unfathomable. And still, despite that very fact, I can see the sense in Naughty Dog/SONY not being able to release the game digitally early, and so many people don't understand why it cannot be done.

    1. The Last of Us Part II is easily one of, if not the biggest flag ship exclusive titles that PlayStation has. Winning over 200 game of the year awards with its first installment, the amount of pre-orders and day one sales this sequel will receive will be astronomical. Due to this, it is not fair to compare the launch of The Last of Us Part II to other titles who are still launching during this time frame. These other games just simply do not carry the magnitude that The Last of Us does, and more importantly, the servers may not be able to handle it. We also do not know how early those games went gold in comparison to The Last of Us. The development and manufacturing process for every game is different.
    2. Some people may not have powerful enough internet in order to completely download the entire game. Must you not forget, The Last of us Part II, an entirely linear game that will not launch with multiplayer, NEEDS TWO DISKS due to the sheer size of the game. Downloading this fully digitally is not in everyone's best interest, despite if it is in your own. Remember that there are millions of other people who will play this game, not just yourself.
    3. It is not possible for everyone to "pre-load" this game before it is set to launch because not everyone wants to pre-order the game, and no one should feel obligated to do so in order to avoid spoilers.
    4. Naughty Dog/SONY will royally piss off retail stores if they launch this game digitally only. Hundreds of pre-orders have already been put in for physical/special/collectors/Ellie editions in hundreds of different retail stores that will get cancelled because people would rather play it now with the digital version, instead of buying two copies. I know that you, just like me, would happily buy two copies of Part II, but you cannot realistically expect millions of people to buy two copies of Part II, and it is selfish to impose that notion on millions of fans.
    5. Probably the most important point I see people make: "If you pre-ordered any sort of physical version, they should email you a key in order to access the game which expires on the day of physical release."

    THIS. WILL. NOT. WORK.

Not only do we go back to my previous points about possibly crashing servers, the INSANE amount of gigabytes that need to download, but if Sony does this, Sony (AND NAUGHTY DOG) will lose millions. Just think about it for a second. At every retail store, if you buy a video-game, you can return it within the return policy if the game is A. Sealed, and B. With a receipt.

If Naughty Dog releases it digitally early, everyone who bought a physical copy for $60 from a retail store will get the digital copy code early, play the game, finish the game, and then when the release drops for the physical version, they can just return the physical version. Essentially playing the game for free.

This is a major problem that comes with that proposition, explaining why it simply will not work. This is especially true considering the game will launch with no multiplayer so for millions of people, the game wont have replay value. They also need to go-ahead from multiple different companies who have a say in the manufacturing of these games. NONE of this is as simple as you think.

For my final point that will probably make some folks upset at first glance but I beg you to understand:

Making video games is a business. Naughty Dog is a company who does business. Your favorite video-games are made by a video-game company which consists of REAL people. Real people who work every single day to pump their undying efforts and talents into a title that will be groundbreaking. This amazing team has been working on this game for years. This company values quality over quantity, and has gone multiple years without releasing a single title because they want to provide us, and themselves, a game that we all can be proud of. You cant provide Naughty Dog quality games if you're pumping out mediocre games so often because "fans want it now!!!"

With all of that said, these people who work every single day, staring at the same pixels hours on end in order to perfect it, they need money. They need money that matches their talent and they cannot do this if sales for this title do not meet expectations. They cannot put more money towards the next title to make it great, they can not have paid time off, they cannot have insurance, they cannot have overtime, they cannot have conventions, they cannot have SONY trust them with the funds, the time, and the work force they need if they do not meet financial expectations.

The company, both Naughty Dog and SONY cannot afford to lose millions of dollars because of a pandemic they have no say in. They deserve every dollar they earn for putting their blood, sweat and tears into this title. So for some people to absolutely HOUND, HARASS, and straight up PERSECUTE these employees who just want to make a great game because "I want it now!!!!!" are selfish, naive, and need to open their eyes to the problems of the real world that are more important than you getting your beloved video-game on time.

This is Naughty Dog's game, this is their baby, and if THEY believe it is best to wait on launch in order to give their fans the better experience, what we owe them is trust in their judgement. That's the least we can do in times like this.

It's 2020 and I can't believe people still have a problem with gay characters in video games

    Posted: 07 Apr 2020 07:18 PM PDT

The other night I was in a chat with some people on ps4 and TLOU 2 got brought up. We were talking about the game and one of the guys said "The only thing I don't like is how they make a big deal about Ellie being gay." I just kept my mouth shut because I didn't want to get into a big argument, but I can't believe there's still people like this. I don't get how her kissing a girl once is "making a big deal". If she kissed a guy no one would care, but she kisses a girl and suddenly it's an agenda. I don't get it. Sorry I just wanted to vent haha

    This game is a masterpiece

Two days ago I started playing The Last Of Us and it's my first time playing this game.

I thought that this is not possible, that no other game would make me feel like that first time at the age of 14 when i first played Half-Life 2. This is it. No. This is better. The story. The acting. The voice acting. The soundtrack. I think this is now my best video game experience i ever had in my life.

It's also stunning even though it's a game from 2013.

Im afraid im near the end of the game and i don't want it to end.

Lets hope The Last Of Us 2 is just around the corner.

Devs should use Part II as a cautionary tale. Don’t announce your game too early.

    Posted: 07 Apr 2020 06:36 PM PDT

I'm sure we've all heard the news of Part II getting delayed. Again. While this recent delay is for entirely different reasons than the first, the wait is going to feel all the more agonizing. Not because of the "delayed indefinitely" status, but because we've been waiting 3 1/2 years.

Announcing your game early only sets you up for disaster. Because now you in essence have a timer. Now fans are expecting to see things from your game within a certain time frame. 10 months after the initial reveal, and we get another CG trailer. 7 months later we get gameplay. Then a year and 3 months later... we get a new trailer, with a release date. Then that release date gets pushed back 3 months, and we don't have anything else since. Then, that new release date also gets pushed back. It's tiring, and the wait between trailers/gameplay is painful. Why shouldn't I expect any of these AAA games to NOT get pushed back from their release dates anymore?

Cyberpunk was announced 7 years ago. Got delayed. Avengers was announced 4 years ago. Got delayed Final Fantasy 7 was announced 5 years ago. Got delayed. On the other hand, games like Mortal Kombat 11, Resident Evil 2/3, Far Cry V, and others have less than a year between announcement and release, and saw no delays

Of course, game developers can't anticipate how long their development cycle is going to be, nor can they predict something like COVID-19, but I Hope game developers and publishers think about announcing their game a little later than they thought would be necessary. Cause I guarantee you, if they announced Part II at PlayStation Experience 2017 instead of 2016, this delay wouldn't sting nearly as much.

I hope this made some sense, as I'm not exactly a great writer, or great at articulating my thoughts. Hope this can spark a good conversation

The Last of Us Part II Fans Are Begging For a Digital Early Release

What you DON'T like about The Last of Us?

I hate to say it, but I am ok with the last of us not getting released digitally.

    Posted: 07 Apr 2020 08:36 AM PDT

Everyone I hear is asking for the game to be released digitally. Don't get me wrong, if they did announce that would happen, i'd be like "fuck yeah!". But, I have been listening to people talk, and it seems like it would hurt the games bottom line. Just to give ya some background (and because I love talking about this game) I am a huge fuckin last of us fan, the story means the world to me. But I want this game to sell as well as possible, I want the team to see their hard work gets paid off, I also want Sony to get the most money possible so they can have more funds for future PS exclusive games.

    What do you guys think?

Thanks to whoever gave me your energy. I will be sure to make sure I stop Buu with it.

Why Part II's delay will probably not be as severe as many fear

    Posted: 07 Apr 2020 02:16 PM PDT

As some of you might have already noticed Sony just revealed the new PS5 Controller 'Dualsense' and i think that (and the Blogpost belonging to it) indicate that Part II will likely be in our hands (Yes, physically haha) much sooner than many of us fear right now.

Despite the current state our world is in, Sony once more referred to a 'Holiday 2020' releasewindow (bare in mind, literally minutes ago). Now, under the current circumstances it would be totally understandable for Sony to stop stressing that timeframe for logistical reasons but somehow Sony seems to be confident enough to still say 'Holiday 2020'.

In other words the guys at Sony think it will be managable to manufacture millions of Playstations til then AND obviously the PS5's games and that is obviously hundreds of times more logistically demanding than the release of Part II.

Of course the covid 19 Situation will sadly get worse and Sonys current Plans may very well be affected by that, but FOR NOW 7 think we are looking at a delay of maybe one or at the most two months, considering the above mentioned.

This is obviously just my take and i'm open for cirticism and/or discussion but i feel pretty confident about this and i thought some of you might be interested. As many of you have noticed there was quite a lot of tention in the sub these past days and very heated arguments as well as many dissapointed posts of people sad about last weeks announcement so i thought it would be nice to have a more hopeful post about the delay!

Let me know what you think if you like!

Nothing else to do now but play the first game again

    Posted: 07 Apr 2020 10:47 PM PDT

So bored with no new the last of us content. Sadly there's not much post game except for playing the first game story over and over again. Wish there was more new content. And I hope part 2 has a lot of replay value

Unfortunately the downside of these excellent linear story games is there is little to no replay value once you beat the game
