    TLOU HBO SERIES MEGATHREAD!

    Posted: 05 Mar 2020 11:14 AM PST

We're as stoked as you guys that Neil and co. is teaming up with HBO and Chernobyl director Craig Mazin to create a The Last of Us TV series.

This sub is dedicated to the video game, so to keep the sub from getting clogged and turning into show discussion only, we have created this megathread where you can discuss everything show related:

    • Which actor/actresses should play the roles of Joel and Ellie?

    • Hopes and wishes for the story?

    • Thoughts about what they might include/exclude?

What's on your mind? Take it away!

Everything we know about MW, Anna, and the Seraphites: a critical look and evaluation of the available information

    Posted: 08 Mar 2020 07:20 PM PDT

    Just a quick disclaimer:

I've noticed a large number of people posting theories about MW's identity (primarily ones that claim MW is Anna). However, I feel like the various theories don't really take all of the available information into account.

I've tried to string together everything I could from the PGW teaser, TLOUP1, as well as posts from Niel Druckmann to get to a reasonable conclusion.

This is a divisive topic, so I'm asking that if your opinion doesn't match mine, that you engage in this thread a civil manner.

With that out of the way, let's get started.

Everything We Know About MW, Anna, and the Seraphites

    1. The PGW teaser shows her in (presumably) Seattle, being dragged along an overgrown freeway (trees are seen sprouting at the literal edge of the road)

    2. Her clothing is similar to that of the Seraphites

    3. Emily (the lead Seraphite in the teaser, name gotten from PS Store avatars) says to her, "they are nested with sin. Breathe(?) in that they may know my..." (she is cut off by other Seraphites bringing Yara)

    1. Emily says to Yara, "Yara, where is the other apostate?" (An apostate is one who has abandoned/forsaken their religion or belief system)

    2. Lev, in reference to MW, says, "She's one of them [Seraphites]" when told to cut MW down

    3. The Seraphites' hanging of MW appears to be ritualistic (we see other hanging corpses that have been disemboweled)

    4. Niel Druckmann has teased that MW's name is 4 letters long in tweets (with 4 white squares in place of a name)

    5. The gameplay teaser shows that the Seraphites call Ellie by "wolf".

    6. Anna's note to Ellie and Marlene's diary/recordings suggest that Anna died very shortly after Ellie's birth.

    7. Left Behind points out that Anna was a nurse prior to the outbreak. She was also already affiliated with Marlene prior to and during the early years of the outbreak.

    Important things to note:

    1. There are many 4 letter female names. Here's an example of a website that lists about 300 and while most names listed on the site are almost certainly duds, there are still a lot of possible contenders for MW's name.

    Conclusions we can make:

    1. Roads tend to be well maintained, especially near cities. There is no way a full sized tree would be allowed to grow right on the edge of a freeway due to safety hazards said trees would pose.

    2. Trees take years to grow to full size. Judging by their size, they appear to be about 20 years old (I'm not a tree expert, but I can provide a guess). This would place the teaser at at least 20 years after outbreak (YAB), assuming that the roads were properly maintained prior to the outbreak.

    3. Yara and Lev are ex-Seraphites, having been referred to as "apostates" by Emily (an apostate is one who has abandoned/forsaken their religion or belief system).

    4. MW's attempted execution appears to be ritualistic. This is based on other hanging, disemboweled corpses and Emily's prayer/rite while readying to disembowel MW.

    5. The Seraphites are a religious group (as evidenced by ritualistic execution, standardized dress, standardized hair, and language ("apostate", "clip her wings", "nested with sin").

    6. The Seraphites are located in Seattle as evidenced by their reference to Ellie as "wolf", a possible connection to the WLF in Seattle. "Wolf" is faster to say than "WLF", and has violent connotations. This also suggests that the Seraphites are at war with the WLF.

    Applying the conclusions:

Based off of the trees in the PGW teaser, it takes place ca. 20 YAB. Furthermore, Ellie being called "wolf" suggests that the group is in Seattle (see pt. 6 in "Conclusions we can make"). MW appears to be about 20-ish y/o.

This, combined with the large number of 4 letter female names heavily discounts theories that MW is Anna. Furthermore, Seattle being located ca. 3000 miles from Boston (where we know Ellie spent her childhood) poses further threat to the Anna theory. I only see two options are available for the Anna theory:

    1. The PGW teaser takes place ca. 5 YAB or earlier. This means that MW would've had to have been early in pregnancy. This would mean that Anna used to be a Seraphite and fleed to Boston with Ellie (and Marlene). (How would Anna have been a nurse while being a Seraphite? They don't seem like they'd be as civilized to have designated professions. This also suggests that Marlene would've been a Seraphite, as well, considering their evident long-standing friendship (I know that it's possible that she [Marlene] wasn't, and that could've led to Anna being punished as seen in the PGW teaser, but where are Yara and Lev if this is the case? They likely would've gone with Anna, if MW is Anna, to Boston).)

A 3000 mile journey would be incredibly harsh on a pregnant woman, even if they had access to cars. If Ellie was already born, the journey would've been even more difficult, as they'd have to protect a loud infant, fighting off infected and other survivors alike at the same time. It is possible that Anna died on this journey, if Ellie had already been born.

    1. Anna didn't die after childbirth, and abandoned Ellie and Marlene to go to Seattle in a way that makes Marlene believe that Anna is dead. It would make very little sense.

Why would someone fake their death, leave their new born daughter and long-time friend, and the safety of the QZ to travel across the country? Let alone join a religious cult? If she had prior affiliation, she would've likely been killed, and known that that would be the case (This can be argued that that's what we're seeing in the PGW teaser).

    Final conclusion:

MW is not Anna. I tried to make the Anna theory stick, but both realistic possibilities conflict with what we know or are logistically very difficult to accomplish.

Niel Druckmann is most likely just fan baiting with the four letter name tease. We know that he has an affinity for teasing the fans (see his tweets regarding MW's name and the original release date).

TL;DR: Applications of the MW Anna theory only show complications that would be very difficult to reconcile. I can't see it despite trying to make it work.

A couple playthroughs ago I noticed that you would get the materials for one shiv everytime you pick up a modded weapon. I've played the main story 11 times and only noticed this on like my 7th playthrough lol. Sorry for the terrible video I was recording one handed and making the shivs

How good does The Last of Us Part II looks? In-game footage of it that is rendered in real time looks as good as a pre-rendered trailer of some other game.

    Never played before, considering starting

    Posted: 09 Mar 2020 12:12 AM PDT

I saw the trailer for The Last of Us 2 and it looked amazing! I want to start it, but I know I don't want to play the first one as the second intrigues me more (I don't really care about missing some of the plot). Looking at the gameplay, I was starting to think that it might be too hard for me... I always play games on easy mode anyway, but I was wondering what everyone else thinks about the difficulty of the game and what it's like playing the game.

Replaying the game after a two-year break. Kind of wish Tommy had been the main character.

    Posted: 08 Mar 2020 03:07 PM PDT

I've taken such a shine to him in this run. I've just reached the university and I'm reflecting on the differences between the brothers. Joel is the stereotypical stoic/grieving hero... I understand that Troy Baker did an incredible job portraying the nuances in Joel's personality, but it's a personality that I'm quite tired of seeing.

Tommy is so determined and cautiously hopeful. He's clearly not as optimistic as he was in the past, and a large part of that must have come from seeing Joel slowly become more and more heartless; and whatever happened between him and the Fireflies. But he hasn't given up completely, and he still has a strong moral code. He's so emotionally complex. I would have loved to see his responses to some of the scenarios in the game.

Anyway. Just my thoughts. More love for Tommy!

    Difficulty for LOU Part Two

    Posted: 08 Mar 2020 08:21 AM PDT

What difficulty are you going to play on? I'm thinking hard and no "listening mode." At the same time, I don't want it to be too hard on myself. Normal might be too easy? I just want the first time to be a great balance of dynamic gameplay like running away, shooting, stabbing, etc without dieing easily every time.

Anyone else go back and forth on this? I've replayed part 1 a few times over the past couple years on Survivor or Grounded so it's hard to imagine going back to normal or hard
