When David is giving Ellie that whole "no such thing as luck" speech, he goes "I sent a group of men out, nearby town, look for food" Food? Damn right they were looking for food!

    TLOU2 Story Theory kind of?

    Posted: 22 Nov 2019 01:13 AM PST

Hey everyone, how are you guys? I've been thinking a lot about this game lately, and I know there's absolutely no way of even knowing the full scope of the story and what the full context of the game is, but it's still fun to speculate right? Also I apologize if similar theories get posted here all the time, and forgive me if it seems a bit rambly lol.

So I've looked up a bunch of developer interviews and Neil said once at E3 they'll have time jumps back and forth similar to how it was done in Left Behind. I'm gonna take a huge leap here based on that information, and ask what if this game was a sequel and prequel interwoven together? Here's my take on what that would entail.

Timeline 1: You play as Ellie. You get to see her grow and love the people in Tommy's settlement, and we see how content she is. We know some violent act is going to cause Ellie to lose it and go on some revenge mission, but I won't speculate on what the violent act is. Since Ellie (presumably) sets off from the settlement in a fit of rage, Joel goes after her not only trying protect her and make sure she's safe, but to also save her from damaging her innocence and who she's becoming through her brutal acts of violence. Ellie doesn't want much to do with Joel since their relationship is strained, but as the story plays out their relationship eventually mends.

Timeline 2: We play as a younger Joel. This is a Joel who is fresh off of Sarah's passing that is becoming bitter and resentful of the world. We are given more insight on his relationship with Tommy, and how he has to commit acts of violence in order to have him and his brother "survive" in the new post-apocalyptic world. If the game actually plays out this way, we get to see the cycle of violence in two different perspectives. One is how we see Joel getting accustomed to killing people for the sake of "survivin'," and the other of how Ellie kills people she's seeking out for purely for revenge rather than survival. It'd be an interesting parallel right?

I think it'd be pretty neat to see two timelines intertwined with each other to comprise the full narrative. I feel like this theory would factor well into it being a "Joel and Ellie story." Now of course the time jumps could be a number of different things, but I had fun theorizing on what the context could be regarding Neil's quote. (Also I know they said Ellie is the only playable character, but Neil lied to us before when he said Joel was the only playable character in the first game, so I'm just gonna assume he's lying again lol.)

TLDR: I theorize that The Last of Us Part II will be a dual story/prequel-sequel about the cycle of violence affecting the psyche of Ellie and a younger Joel.
